STCW Standards for Seafarers:
Complete Guide 2025
The International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW) is the cornerstone of maritime professional qualification worldwide. This comprehensive guide explains STCW requirements, what's changed in 2025, and how these standards affect your maritime career.
📋 What is STCW?
STCW was adopted by the IMO in 1978 and significantly updated by the Manila Amendments in 2010. It sets minimum qualification standards for masters, officers, and watch personnel on seagoing merchant ships — and applies to seafarers from all IMO member states.
Core STCW Certificates Every Seafarer Needs
Basic Safety Training (BST)
Mandatory for all seafarers. BST covers four core competencies:
- Personal Survival Techniques — survival suits, life rafts, distress signals
- Fire Prevention and Firefighting — fire equipment, procedures, drills
- Elementary First Aid — immediate care, CPR, basic medical procedures
- Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities — watchkeeping, fatigue, communication
STCW Revalidation Requirements
STCW certificates are valid for 5 years. Revalidation requires seafarers to demonstrate continued professional competence through:
- Approved sea service of at least 12 months within the preceding 5 years, OR
- Completion of approved refresher training, OR
- Passing an approved examination
STCW for Officers — Certification by Grade
Officer of the Watch (OOW) — Deck
Requires completion of STCW Table A-II/1 competencies including navigation, cargo handling, and watchkeeping. Typically requires a minimum of 12 months sea service as part of an approved seagoing service program.
Chief Mate and Master
Senior deck officers must hold certificates meeting STCW Tables A-II/2 (Chief Mate) and A-II/2 (Master). Additional endorsements for specific vessel types (tankers, passenger vessels) require type-specific training.
Chief Engineer and Second Engineer
Engineering officers must meet STCW Table A-III/2 (Second Engineer) and A-III/2 (Chief Engineer) competencies, including knowledge of marine engineering systems, maintenance, and casualty management.
New STCW Requirements for 2025
The IMO is progressively introducing new STCW requirements reflecting emerging industry needs:
- Cyber security training — integrated into existing watchkeeping competencies
- Alternative fuels operations — LNG, methanol, and hydrogen crew competencies
- Autonomous vessel operations — preliminary guidance for remote and autonomous systems
- Mental health and wellbeing — structured guidance for senior officers
